  5.     In chic restaurants and athletic clubs, health-conscious
  6. Americans guzzled so much Perrier bottled mineral water in the
  7. 1980s that it became the drink of the decade. Some of the fizz
  8. may go out of Perrier's $450 million annual sales with word
  9. last week that the firm's U.S. distributor is recalling its
  10. entire inventory from store shelves nationwide because
  11. laboratory tests found benzene in a small number of bottles.

  13.     The potential carcinogen was discovered by North Carolina
  14. health officials, who so prize the purity of the water from an
  15. underground spring in Vergeze, France, that they use it as a
  16. standard test of other water supplies. Although the state
  17. advises the public not to consume the product, the federal Food
  18. and Drug Administration considers the risks of contracting
  19. cancer one in a million over a person's lifetime. The company
  20. is investigating its packaging and distribution centers to
  21. locate the problem. In the wake of doubts cast on oat bran's
  22. nutritional benefits, it's almost enough to drive yuppies back
  23. to pretzels and beer.
